Historic Paradise Skiing
Skiing has long been popular at Mount Rainier. Regular ski competitions were held in the 1930-40s, and Paradise was the site of National Downhill and Slalom Championships and Olympic Trials in 1935 to qualify for the 1936 Olympics. This video shows slalom ski racing below Alta Vista at Paradise along with some exhibition ski jumping! Mount Rainier National Park Archives Footage (mora_25028). No audio. Description: Black and white historic footage of several skiers slalom racing down a steep slope with spectators watching. Each contestant weaves between small flags planted in the snow as they descend quickly. A ski jumper leaps off a snow ramp, arms windmilling as he flies through the air, before landing on the snowy slope below. Spectators line the slope on either side, one putting out a ski to measure where the jumper landed.
