The Strange Torture Of Dining Like A Georgian Lady | History for Sleep

A Georgian dinner party was not simply a meal. It was a performance of class, gender, restraint and marriageability. In a candlelit London dining room, surrounded by roasted beef, rich soups, wine, jellies, forced fruit and silver, a young woman could be hungry — but she could not look hungry.By 1785, the female body at the dinner table was expected to obey a strict social script. The corset shaped her posture and limited her breathing. The gown controlled how she moved. The fork, spoon, glass, portion size and pace of eating all became evidence of refinement. Soup could not be finished. Meat had to be taken in small amounts. Pleasure in food had to remain private. Appetite, especially female appetite, was treated as something to hide.Below the dining room, the kitchen worked from before dawn to create the feast: cooks, maids, scullery girls and footmen preparing food that many ladies upstairs would barely touch in public. The result was one of Georgian society’s strangest contradictions: a table built to display abundance, and women trained to survive it by pretending they did not want what was in front of them.
