As he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled on and eaten by the birds of the air. 6 Some fell on rocky ground, and as it grew up, it withered because it had no moisture. 7 Some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8 But some fell on good soil, and it grew and produced fruit a hundredfold.” When Jesus had said these things, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let him hear!” 9 His disciples asked him what this parable meant. 10 He answered them, “To you it has been given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God, but to others it is in parables, so that ‘Looking they may see, but not perceive, and hearing they may hear, but not understand.’[d] 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 The seed along the path is the one who hears the word, but then the devil comes and takes it away from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13 The seed on the rocky ground is the one who, when he hears, receives the word with joy, but has no root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation he falls away. 14 The seed that fell among thorns is the one who hears the word, but as he goes along he is choked by the worries, riches, and pleasures of this life, and his fruit does not ripen. 15 The seed on the good ground are those who, when they hear the word, keep it in an honest and good heart and bear fruit with patience.
