Being a dramaturge isn't really a single profession—it's more like being at least ten at once. The term comes from the Greek and means "playmaker." Originally, the role was solely responsible for selecting and adapting dramatic texts. However, head dramaturge Andrea Koschwitz has considerably more to do today: She selects plays, rewrites texts, oversees productions, discovers emerging authors and current issues, gathers background information, designs programs, organizes audience Q&As, develops season concepts, and much more. A dramaturge must therefore be a true multitasking talent with a passion for literature, art, and theater: from the color scheme of the program to contemporary interpretations of classic plays—they are consulted on everything. In doing so, they help to sharpen the artistic profile of a production and the theater as a whole.
