The West is still extremely powerful, of course. It has weapons, banks, platforms, universities, foundations, media, armies, and intelligence. But it no longer has a monopoly on production, technology, power, or even imagination. So what happens when it discovers that China can become modern without becoming Western? That Africa can attempt to liberate itself without asking permission from Paris? That Latin America can once again think of itself as outside the Monroe Doctrine? We talked about this with Carlo Formenti, one of the most inconvenient Marxist intellectuals on the Italian scene. For Formenti, the problem isn't just Western imperialism: it's also the way a huge segment of the left and Western Marxism has allowed itself to be colonized by liberalism.
