Malaga Spain will amaze you! Architecture, Market, Roman Ruins, Moorish Fort & Best Views
Malaga #Spain #Travel #market #Architecture #Europe #Vacation #TravelGuide #costadelsol I visited Malaga more than 20 years ago, back when we had to take pictures on film, so I had very few photos to remind me of the city. I was only there for a couple of days back then, but this time, I decided to stay for about a week, working at night and sightseeing during the day. Upon arrival, I noticed the airport is huge, beautiful, and very modern—definitely not the one I arrived at before. It was empty because of the season and the late hour (around 7 or 8 p.m.), but that didn't matter once we got to the city. The Vibe: Nightlife and Dining One thing I love about Spain is that it doesn't matter how late it is; if you go outside, you will find people and open restaurants. Late Night Culture: We settled into our Airbnb around 11 p.m., and the streets were not deserted. People were still eating and having a good time on a Monday night, which is pretty incredible. The Atmosphere: The pedestrian area where we stayed is beautiful day and night, making it a great place to hang out and people-watch. Exploring the City Architecture and Layout Malaga has a unique character defined by a mix of architectural styles. Old Town: The part of town we walked around is an "old town," but not super old—maybe 100 or 200 years, which is modern in European eyes. Historic Influences: Because Malaga is a Mediterranean city that was occupied by Muslims, many buildings have an Arabic look and feel. However, depending on the "pocket" of the city, some buildings are relatively new and plain. The Basilica: We visited a massive Basilica; calling it "massive" is an understatement. While it might not seem immense in Rome, here it looks gigantic because there are not many huge buildings surrounding it. The surrounding orange trees are beautiful, though the oranges are for industrial products, not eating. The Market and Food To find good food, we went to the Mercado (market). The Scene: It was busier than I expected for the off-season, filled mostly with Spanish-speaking people. Seafood: Being a port city, this place is heaven if you are a seafood lover. We found a spot to stand and eat, trying a wide variety of seafood. Ham: Everywhere we went, shops sold Jamon Iberico, which is best when cut by hand rather than by machine. Key Sites Calle Marqués de Larios: This is the main tourist drag, but I found it one of the less interesting parts of the city. It caters to tourists with big chain stores and restaurants that allegedly aren't that great. Roman Theater & The Fort: We passed through a narrow lane to reach the Teatro Romano. It was bigger and more historic than I expected. We climbed up to the fort, seeing history from the Roman Empire to the Arabic period all in one place. The Port: The port is massive, with gardens that are nicely kept despite the dry climate. I was a bit afraid of the height looking down from the walls, but the views were spectacular. Final Thoughts We loved Malaga. It is an excellent place to stay for a period of time because accommodations are reasonably priced, and the food is reasonable compared to other Spanish cities. While it has no world-renowned monuments, it is a great base, and you can easily visit Alhambra and Sevilla if you want to. @abcdseetheworld888
