Devizes Branch Quarter Peal - Heddington
St Andrews, Heddington - 6 bells in G - My home tower! Earlier today, some ringers from the Devizes Branch came to ring a quarter peal of 1260 Plain Bob Minor at my home tower. I managed to get some videos on my phone outside and then an audio recording from my house. These have quite an interesting story to go with them! In 1934 the bells were deemed to be unringable. They were retuned, rehung in a new frame, and augmented to a ring of 5 by John Taylor & Co. in 1939. Before the 3rd, 4th, and tenor were added, the 5th was the only bell in the tower. It was hung in the middle of the belfry for chiming. When they were augmented to a ring of 4, they had to chisel a bell-shaped groove in the beams of the clock room in order to get the tenor up and hung. In 1953 the treble was added to make them a ring of 6, in celebration of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. The treble is hung in a separate frame (According to CCCBR Dove) which is made by Gillet and Johnston. Any questions about the bells, ask away and I will try and answer to the best I can! After all, I am one of the steeple keepers so, I should have an understanding of them!
