The bronze shims located in the center differential housing are completely gone 😬, crushed and ground down by the gears ⚙️. The planetary gears then rub directly against the steel of the housing, deeply scratching the surface and rendering it unusable 👎. These shims have the part number ➡️ FRC6968 and are easy to replace. It's also important to check the alignment of the planetary gears and adjust the play correctly. It's a 2-speed gearbox with a center differential lock. It can be found on the Land Rover 90, 110, 130, Defender, Discovery 1/2, and Range Rover Classic between 1984 and 1988. Gear ratios vary depending on the year and model. The most common gear ratios are 1.41 on Defenders and 1.22 on Discovery 1s. You'll also find 1.21 (Disco 2 TD5), 1.197, 1.66, etc. 1.30 conversions also exist. It all depends on the intended use and the overall compatibility of the engine and wheels. This gearbox is most often paired with an LT77 or an R380 as the main transmission. Beware of a common problem with early models: they lack a drilled input pinion, which prevents proper lubrication of the transmission/transfer case coupling.
