I didn't avoid making rookie mistakes—but the roof is still standing! 💪 Practical tips, tools, and DIY tricks—this is how I build a frame house. In my step-by-step house build (frame house), I built the trusses and installed them myself. It was a true "roof step by step": template for the OSB trusses, planing the top plate, connecting with ring nails, carpenter's angles, and screws for the connectors. I also had to manually lift the trusses when the equipment failed. If anyone asks how to build roof trusses, I'll show you how to build them in practice: Roof Trusses: Assembly and Roof Trusses: How to Build a Frame House Step by Step. In this episode, I show the entire process: from the template on the floor (OSB), through assembling the roof trusses, to manual installation on the walls. This is my step-by-step process for building a frame house—I built the trusses myself and installed them myself (when the equipment didn't work). If you're looking for practical experience building roof trusses, see Roof Trusses: Installation and Roof Trusses: How to Build in Real-World Environments. Today, I'm being helped by my dad, Bodzio, with whom I'm manually assembling the first roof trusses. Later, with Tadek's help, we added another truss by hand, and then I perfected the technique with a 1-ton chain hoist and a 5-meter beam. This made lifting the trusses by hand easy—so easy, in fact, that my 13-year-old son, Benek, managed to operate it. Along the way, I'm sharing mistakes and improvements (building a house step by step): Template for OSB trusses, 220 mm bottom chord (in my case, instead of 195 mm from the design), right/left top chords, connections with perforated plates and ring nails, carpenter's angles for the roof cap, screws for the connectors. Lesson learned: after assembling 5 trusses, don't change the template—a minor geometry correction resulted in a ~1 cm difference in the ridge height (manageable, but it's extra work). Stabilization: long beams as temporary bracing, checking the diagonals and axes in the wind, planing the roof cap for perfect level. This is also an episode about working together: 4 intense days with Dad (little talk, lots of work 😉), followed by a weekend of work with Benek. I'll also mention a more difficult topic: half a day wasted trying to recover money from a dishonest supplier (a separate episode, if you'd like—let me know). Construction safety: don't do such lifts alone, don't stand under the load, wear gloves/a hard hat, and brace immediately after the truss is placed.
