Episode 1325 Norma (Diana Davies) tries to kid herself that Ken (Bill Roache) and Janet (Judith Barker) were meeting for professional reasons. Stan (Bernard Youens) finds a loophole in the syndicate by smoking a pipe instead. Ray (Neville Buswell) receives a letter from Len (Peter Adamson) in France questioning why Rita (Barbara Knox) hasn’t written to him. The syndicate members develop their own methods for coping without cigarettes. Janet and Ken go out for lunch and spend the afternoon getting better acquainted. Ray waits for Tricia Hopkins (Kathy Jones) to arrive for their date only for her to be dragged into the Rovers in her school uniform by her mother Vera (Kathy Staff). Vera explodes at Annie (Doris Speed) and accuses her of serving alcohol to minors. Annie cuts Vera down to size by pointing out that she’s only got herself to blame if Tricia has the money to spend on looking and acting beyond her years and bars them both from the pub. Alf (Bryan Mosley) tells Annie that Norman Leach (Freddie Lees) has been banged up for seven years for attacking Bet (Julie Goodyear). Elsie (Pat Phoenix) changes her tune about Janet and sympathises with her desire for companionship. Ken reveals to Janet he is looking for a wife, and Janet admits she is looking for a husband. A man named Conrad Farmer (Bernard Atha) arrives looking for Len to thank him for pulling his wife from the canal 5 weeks ago. Alf realises that this was the real reason Len failed to stop him from resigning at the town hall that day.
