Reflective Backplates for Traffic Signals - Caltrans News Flash #229
New retroreflective backplates are being installed at signalized intersections throughout California. These retroreflective bordered backplates -- yellow reflective strips placed around the perimeter of traffic signals -- increase traffic signal visibility during morning and nighttime hours, as well as during times of power outage. Since 2019, reflective backplates have been installed at more than 900 state intersections. According to studies conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), reflective backplates have reduced late night and early morning collisions by 50% at intersections where they are installed.
