From this republican utopia would arise certain excesses and shattered lives. A deputy for Réunion for 25 years, Michel Debré made the island a small laboratory of Gaullism. A former impoverished colony, which became a department in 1946, Réunion modernized at breakneck speed, notably at the cost of a brutal population control policy whose consequences are still felt today.
