Restoration of Logan Gaff Cutter 'Petrel' Ep1

My name is Larry Eastwood. I live on the foreshores of Pittwater, Sydney — and this is the story of Petrel. Petrel was designed by Arch Logan and built by the Logan Brothers in Auckland, New Zealand in 1900 to the 30ft Linear Rater rule. She's 42ft on deck and some 50ft overall, built of two layers of kauri on stringers with no ribs — one of a small number of near sister ships that were the gunboats of their day on Sydney Harbour, the Derwent, and Port Phillip Bay. She came to my attention in 2017 through Simon Sadubin of Sydney Wooden Boats. First impression was of a badly neglected boat with resident nesting seagulls. I purchased her for a nominal sum, moved her to Pittwater, and began what would become a multi-year restoration project. This episode covers the full strip-out — cabin, cockpit, deck, bulkheads, rudder, keel, and engine, down to bare stringers, ribs, and floors. And the beginning of what comes next. Petrel is a rare surviving example of a classic gaff-rigged Logan design being restored on Sydney's Pittwater using traditional methods, back to her near original configuration Follow the full journey from the beginning.
