In Full Metal Jack and Apocalypse Now, the main character doesn't have a moral force pulling them away from a lifestyle dictated by primal urges. In Platoon, Sgt. Elias becomes that positive force for Taylor. Eventually, Elias goes to war with his humorless foil, Sgt. Barnes., and the results are fascinating. Their war is over the definition of courage.
