John Scofield - Steve Swallow Duo - Hamburg Germany - March 16, 1985 - Radio Broadcast

This is a real gem of a German radio broadcast that I forgot I had and probably haven't listened to in about 35 years. I previously uploaded a much shorter recording of this pair playing duo to open two sets with Paul Bley, which I recorded in NYC on March 5, 1985. Shortly after that week-long engagement with Bley ended, Sco and Swallow apparently got on a plane and headed to Hamburg, Germany for this performance. Scofield says between songs that they just got off their plane a few hours ago and were still on US time. Much of the set consists of Scofield tunes that he and Swallow played in their trio with Adam Nussbaum. There are many highlights in this set, but for me, getting to hear Swallow play piano is a real treat (he does a medley for more than ten minutes). I don't think I've heard him on that instrument anywhere else. Swallow sounds remarkably like Carla Bley on the piano, to my ears (they were close musical (and then personal) partners for many years, so it doesn't surprise me). Another great couple of minutes are Swallow's bass solo on Dome, starting at 18:36. So damn funky (in Swallow's own way). The other highlights are Scofield playing Tennessee Waltz solo, followed by Swallow playing Red River Valley solo. If anyone knows any of the tunes Swallow plays on piano (other than Away), please let me know.
