Julia Florida by Agustín Barrios Mangoré, performed on classical guitar. A poetic miniature written in 1938, full of intimacy, nostalgia, and quiet tenderness. “A primary reason we play any piece of music is because it touches us in some deeply personal manner. There exists within the piece some musical truth that resonates within us. Such is the case with Agustín Barrios Mangoré’s Julia Florida.” — Benjamin Verdery Julia Florida is one of the most delicate and poetic compositions by the great Paraguayan guitarist and composer Agustín Barrios Mangoré. Written in December 1938 during his stay in Costa Rica, the piece dates from a difficult period in Barrios’s life, marked by health problems and economic hardship. The work was dedicated to Julia Martínez, niece of Francisco Salazar and a student of Barrios himself. The title Julia Florida comes from the affectionate nickname given to her by the family: florida (“blossomed”), referring to her rapid adolescence, when she seemed to bloom like a spring flower.
