The expedition's objective is to study the effects of global warming. During the voyage, they find a Soviet space capsule that has been frozen in the ice for decades. As they bring the capsule aboard and it begins to thaw, they release specimens of tardigrades (water bears) that have been exposed to cosmic radiation during the Cold War. These microscopic creatures have undergone severe mutations and now possess the ability to infect, devour, and assimilate any DNA, transforming the crew into grotesque monsters.
