I am yours; save me, for I have sought your statutes.” (Ps. 119:93, 94) Without a doubt, sin is the greatest obstacle to a close relationship with God. Sin not only separates us from God (Isa. 59:2), but it also deceives, wounds, consumes, and ultimately destroys us. Our struggle with sin and with ourselves is the greatest battle we will ever face; the consequences of this battle are vast and eternal. Some people deny that sin is an inherent reality of life on Earth. They say it’s just human nature to indulge in pleasure. But aren’t we condoning sin because society has become so comfortable with it? We may tiptoe around the subject of sin, afraid of offending someone if we call a spade a spade. However, the more we choose to live comfortably with sin, the further we distance ourselves from a healthy relationship with God. Yes, everyone sins; our thoughts, motives, actions, and words hurt ourselves, others, and God. Sin destroys our relationship with God, but He has revealed Himself to us through His law, which exposes sin in our lives. This week we will explore why God gave us His law and how a person who has broken it can restore his relationship with God.
