This is a corner introducing noteworthy athletes and sports at the Kagoshima National Sports Festival! This time, we'll be focusing on naginata, which was crowned Japan's best at last year's Tochigi National Sports Festival. This time, we visited athletes sweating indoors as their high-pitched voices reverberated! The naginata they use in competitions are about 2.2 meters long. In kendo, the parts of the body that are struck or thrusted are the "men, torso, kote, and tsuki (neck)," but in naginata, the "sune" is also included. This sport uses the naginata, which is longer than a bamboo sword, and there are many parts that are struck, and there are a wide variety of techniques, making it a sport with many highlights. Naginata competitions are divided into two categories: "performances" and "matches." In "performances," which are performed without protective gear, there are eight "attacks and responses" defined by the All Japan Naginata Federation. From these, pairs of athletes will perform three designated forms and compete to see who has the best technique. The prefecture's representative pair, Taguchi Maya of Kagoshima Bank and Akiba Eri of Kanoya University of Technology, won the performance event at last year's Tochigi National Sports Festival. The "match" is a team event in which teams of three athletes wear protective gear. The first team to win two games wins. Competing with Taguchi and Akiba in the match event is Murata Rin. At the 2019 Ibaraki National Sports Festival, she competed in the match event as a junior girl and contributed to the team's runner-up finish. Murata has been honing her skills with Taguchi and Akiba since elementary school in a club team in Minamikyushu City, and they say they know each other well. All three have more than 10 years of competitive experience and are expected to win prizes in the match event. Following in their footsteps are Taira, Kazutake, and Ninomiya, who are competing in the junior girls' division. Unlike the three adult girls, the three who are competing in the junior girls' division started naginata in high school. However, they are skilled enough to have participated in the national championships twice! There are six players in the naginata competition, including adults and juniors. Usually, there is a friendly atmosphere without any barrier between seniors and juniors, but when they take up their naginata, their expressions change! ?
