Eine deutsche Stadt mitten in Rumänien? Die Geschichte der Siebenbürger Sachsen

A German Sibiu in the middle of Romania? 🇩🇪🇷🇴 Hard to believe – but here, in the heart of Transylvania, Germans still live today: the Transylvanian Saxons. Their history stretches back almost 900 years – from medieval knights to modern citizens of Romania. In the 12th century, German settlers followed the call of the Hungarian King Géza II and founded cities such as Sibiu, Brașov, Sighișoara, and Bistrița. They built fortified churches, shaped trade, culture, and architecture, and maintained their language and faith for centuries – even between Ottomans, Habsburgs, and revolutions. After the Second World War, the rift came: deportations, expropriations, and emigration during the communist era caused the German community to shrink dramatically. But even today, German schools, churches, and cultural associations exist in Transylvania. The most famous Transylvanian Saxon is Klaus Iohannis, President of Romania. 👉 In this video, you'll learn: How the Transylvanian Saxons came to Romania Why they built their own towns and fortified churches What happened to them in the 20th century And how their culture lives on today A chapter of German history that hardly anyone knows about—and that can still be felt in the streets of Sibiu.
