Dağ Köyünde Şartlar Zor, Hayatlar Mutlu (Elazığ / Cumhuriyetçi Köyü)

This week, we visited the village of Cumhuriyet in Maden, Elazığ. In the Kirazlı hamlet, one of the village's three hamlets, we savored the delicious food prepared by the skillful hands of our smiling old ladies, filtered from their hearts, and brought to our table. We shared in their warm, welcoming conversations that never made us feel out of place. Uncle İrfan's poetic prayers, interspersed with folk songs, soothed us. We were both amazed to see that Ahmet Hoca, who has been the imam in this hamlet for 15 years, had transformed the state-provided housing into a flower garden. We witnessed firsthand the bond of trust and affection he had forged with the villagers. On one side, the 42-degree heat, on the other, the cool breeze from the mountains at an altitude of 2100 meters and the icy spring water… That refreshment that seeped into our lungs reminded us once again: This is why we head for the villages. Here, labor is precious, trust is eternal. Keys are left at the door, and hearts are opened through conversation. The land remains by the villagers' side like a loyal friend. And perhaps most preciously, they plant only heirloom seeds; after each harvest, they reserve the best for the following year. Because heirloom seeds are both a legacy passed down to us from the past and the most beautiful legacy to be left for the future.
