273) Brown Lake

On Friday, October 24th, I drove straight from work in Toronto for 3 1/2 hours up north to the Rain Lake entrance of Algonquin Park. There, I camped at one of the two jump-off spots and enjoyed a roaring campfire beneath some serious starscapes. The next morning, swirls of mist danced across the lake in the first subzero temperatures of the autumn camping season. After a delicious breakfast at “The Fork on Main” in Kearney, I hiked 17 kilometres into the back country to enjoy an evangelical evening of sumptuous silence and solitude. Again, the stars came out to dazzle me. It was so quiet that my eardrums were humming. Temperatures dropped to as low as -5°C, but I was well prepared and loved every crisp moment of it. Please join me for what is officially the last backcountry camp and hike weekend of the year!
