When the Jewish king Hoshea refused to pay tribute and closed the gates of Samaria, a three-year siege began that drained the Assyrian treasury - and cost Shalmaneser the throne, and perhaps his life. Then came Sargon II, a king of dubious legitimacy who had to prove his right to power through war, religion, and the grandiose construction of his own capital, Dur-Sharrukin. He crushed Urartu, cunningly took Babylon - but died in battle with the Anatolian tribes, and his body was never found. For the Assyrians, this became the most terrible curse - an unburied death, a sign that the gods themselves had turned away from their chosen one. Sargon's son, Sennacherib, fled in panic from his father's curse, leaving Dur-Sharrukin, and built a new capital in Nineveh. But paranoia and a thirst for revenge led him first to a bloody siege of Jerusalem, and later to the complete destruction of sacred Babylon: the city was literally flooded with the waters of the Euphrates, and the statue of the god Marduk was taken away as a trophy. Retribution was not long in coming - the king was killed by his own sons right in the temple.
