What We Discovered in Prince William Sound...

Join us as we continue exploring the incredible wilderness of Prince William Sound, Alaska, aboard our 80-foot steel schooner, The Alaskan Gypsy. What started as another day of cruising quickly turned into one of our favorite adventures yet. We navigated through Columbia Bay, surrounded by towering blue icebergs that had calved from the legendary Columbia Glacier, one of the fastest retreating tidewater glaciers in North America. Although thick fog kept us from reaching the glacier moraine, the journey itself reminded us why life aboard is all about adapting to the conditions and appreciating wherever the day takes you. Along the way we experienced some of the closest humpback whale encounters we've ever witnessed. The whales were actively feeding all around us, surfacing just feet from the boat, and the kids even had the unforgettable opportunity to paddleboard while humpbacks cruised nearby. Moments like these are impossible to plan and are exactly why we love exploring Alaska by boat. We also spend time hiking above Columbia Bay for sweeping views of the glacier, icebergs, mountains, and endless waterways before trying a little recreational gold panning along the shoreline. Prince William Sound has a rich history shaped by glaciers, commercial fishing, Native Alaskan heritage, and the gold rush era, when nearby Valdez served as the gateway to the famous Klondike and Interior Alaska gold fields. Even today, traces of that history can still be found throughout the Sound.
