The Lifeblood of the Planet: preserving ocean biodiversity

Jon Bowermaster, Writer and Adventurer; Daryl Hannah, Actress and Environmentalist; Fabien Cousteau, Founder, Plant-A-Fish; Chris Gorell Barnes, Co-Founder, Blue Marine Foundation Chris Gorell Barnes chairs an expert panel on the crisis in the oceans at the Six Senses SLOW LIFE Symposium. Drawing on their shared love and experience of the oceans, the panelists discuss the many threats to ocean life and the implications for all life on earth. What kind of stewardship role should and could the tourism industry be playing? Currently less than 1% of the oceans are protected. Over-fishing, coral bleaching and ocean acidification are taking their toll. Fabien Cousteau reminds us that we have lost 60% of the world's fish stocks since the late 1950s. The panel discuss the pros and cons of aqua-culture and cite examples of marine protection schemes and their effectiveness. The panelists were talking at the SLOW LIFE Symposium, an annual event to address increased sustainability and environmental protection in the travel and tourism industry.
