Written for Belief: An Introduction to the Gospel of John In this sermon, we intend to introduce a series of expository sermons on the Gospel of John. We invite you to: 1. Understand the "Great Purpose of the Gospel" in John 20:30-33: "The signs were written so that you may believe that 'Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.'" The gospel is not merely informative; it is confrontational: it demands a response. 2. Study the "Great Themes of the Gospel of John" • The divinity of Christ (John 1; John 8:58 "I Am") • The love of God (John 3:16) • The necessity of believing • Not all are children of God (John 1:11-13) • Believing implies obedience (John 3:36) • Eternal life According to John, believing is not just intellectual acceptance, but trusting and obeying. 3. Accept "The Final Challenge" The central question of the gospel is: The Word became flesh. What will you do with Him? If this is true, eternal life is at stake.
