JAN GARBAREK - BILL CONNORS - PARIS - 1978

This is a wonderful Jan Garbarek Group performance from Paris in 1978, on the stage of the Théâtre de l’Empire, with Jan Garbarek on saxophone, John Taylor on keyboards, Bill Connors on guitar, Eberhard Weber on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums. The two pieces featured here are Passing and Spansk Samba, and the performance catches this group in a very distinctive moment, with Bill Connors bringing his own sound and intensity into Garbarek’s world. There is a beautiful sense of space, atmosphere, and movement in this music, along with that strong European lyricism and openness that made this band so compelling. What I especially like here is the contrast in the playing: Garbarek’s clear, searching lines, Bill Connors’ sharp and fluid guitar voice, John Taylor’s harmonic color, and the deep, singing presence of Eberhard Weber and Jon Christensen underneath it all. A beautiful document from a remarkable group and period. Want online lessons?
