After years of exile in Germany, the Sayyam family returns to Yarmouk, a Damascus neighborhood devastated by the civil war. What they find is not their former home, but ruins: only the skeleton of their house remains. Like many Syrians living abroad, the Sayyams return to a Syria marked by loss, scarcity, and the lingering effects of the conflict. Their eldest son died during one of the massacres that occurred during the harshest years of the previous regime. Today, while the government promotes the return of refugees, the situation on the ground remains complex: damaged neighborhoods, limited basic services, and reconstruction efforts still in their early stages.
