After renting bicycles in Siem Reap, we set off for one of the world's most iconic archaeological sites: Angkor Wat. This is Part 1 of my four-part Angkor adventure, beginning with the journey by bike before exploring the main temple itself. As we wander through the enormous temple complex, we uncover its fascinating history - originally built as a Hindu temple in the 12th century before gradually becoming a Buddhist site. The influence of both religions can still be seen throughout the architecture, carvings, and symbolism. The deeper we explore, the more surprises await. Every time it feels like we've reached the centre of Angkor Wat, another level, courtyard, or towering structure appears ahead. We also discuss the temple's origins, its mysterious royal connections, and the incredible engineering that has made it one of the greatest monuments ever constructed.
