Delft clay casting is a metal casting method that uses a fine, reusable clay mixture called Delft clay to create molds for pouring molten metal. It’s a relatively simple and popular technique among hobbyists and small-scale metalworkers due to its ease of use, low cost, and ability to produce high-detail casts. It’s composed mainly of: Fine sand (for detailed impressions) Oil binder (typically mineral oil, which gives it cohesive and reusable properties) 🛠️ Basic Delft Clay Casting Process Prepare the Frame (Flask): A two-part metal or wooden frame (flask) holds the clay. The two halves are referred to as the cope (top) and drag (bottom). Create the Mold: Pack Delft clay into the drag and press the object (called the pattern) halfway in. Dust the surface with parting powder (like talc or cornstarch), then place and pack the cope on top with more clay. Carefully separate the two halves and remove the pattern, leaving a cavity in the shape of the object. Cut Sprue and Vent Channels: Carve channels into the mold for pouring metal (sprue) and for gases to escape (vents). Reassemble and Pour: Align and close the flask. Pour molten metal (like silver, brass, aluminum, or bronze) into the sprue. Cool and Clean: Allow the metal to solidify and cool. Open the flask, remove the casting, and clean off any residual clay and sprue material.
