Professor Kim Seong-cheol, a Buddhist scholar, is a dentist by training. He graduated from Seoul National University's College of Dentistry and practiced dentistry before specializing in Indian Buddhism at Dongguk University's graduate school. After asking his wife, also a dentist, for her understanding, saying, "I'll read all the Buddhist books I want for two years," he left and became a full-time professional. He has been a professor of Buddhist studies at Dongguk University's Gyeongju Campus since 2000 and served as president of the Korean Buddhist Association. As a child, he often visited the Venerable Tanheo at his home, brought in by his father, Professor Kim Jong-seo, who served as Dean of Seoul National University's College of Education and advisor to the Seoul National University Buddhist Student Association. Professor Kim Jong-seo was a Christian, but after meeting Venerable Hanam, the first head of the Jogye Order and Tanheo's mentor, and studying at Odaesan, he continued to practice Buddhism throughout his life, even while working as a university professor. Professor Kim recalls that Venerable Tanheo, whom he met frequently through his father's connection, possessed the demeanor of a saint, yet possessed a profound humility, a consistent "hasim" (a spirit of humility and respect for others). He was passionate about painting until his second year of high school, diligently participating in the art club. However, he says he entered dental school after hearing from adults that "painting is hard to make a living. Dentists only need to work a few hours, and the rest of the time, they can read as many Buddhist books as they want and meditate." Therefore, both during dental school and his career, he would read Buddhist books and meditate whenever he had free time. Because of his passionate pursuit of study, he was able to pursue "Buddhist studies" for his life. He earned his master's and doctoral degrees in Madhyamaka studies from Yongsu, known as the "second Buddha." Yongsu offered him a path in life before becoming a professional Buddhist scholar. Professor Kim's lab is located in a corner of his wife's dental clinic in Seobuichon-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. The couple were classmates at Seoul National University's School of Dentistry. He commutes between his lab in Gyeongju and this one in Seoul, devoting himself solely to research. He is a contemporary otaku. He has swept academic awards for his outstanding research in various fields of Buddhism, including Madhyamaka and Avatamsaka.
