On 4 June 2026, Mali did something it had never done in this war — it stopped reacting and started hunting. The government in Bamako placed a 2 billion CFA franc bounty (around $3.5 million) on Iyad Ag Ghaly, the leader of al-Qaeda’s Sahel branch JNIM, 1.5 billion CFA on his deputy Amadou Koufa, and cash rewards on 2 Tuareg leaders of the so-called Azawad Liberation Front, including Alghabass Ag Intalla. The Western press has already decided what it means: desperation. The act of a government that lost the north after the 25 April offensive and can’t win on the ground.
