NIEUWOUDTVILLE - South Africa's Cleanest Town

Hi everyone! In this video, I explore the beautiful town of Nieuwoudtville in the Northern Cape of South Africa. It is situated on the R27 connecting the Western Cape and the Northern Cape. Nieuwoudtville is a key stop on the South African Flower Route and has the nickname 'The Bulb Capital of the World'. The town has certainly earned a reputation as a paradise for botanists and flower lovers. From August and throughout spring, the fields and hillsides explode into color as indigenous bulbs and wildflowers bloom in spectacular displays, attracting visitors from all over the world. The town of Nieuwoudtville was officially founded in 1897, on land purchased from H.C. Nieuwoudt, who gave the town its name. Many of the original sandstone buildings survive, including the beautiful Neo-Gothic sandstone church, which forms the heart of town. This was my first time in Nieuwoudtville, so the vlog is very much a first impressions video. Join me as I explore this fascinating destination and provide commentary on my experiences. The vlog starts with me visiting the Dutch Reformed Church, where the minister shows me inside including the impressive pulpit and organ which is still operated by hand. I also walk around the church yard, spotting an area resembling Golgotha and visit the Church Museum, where I learn more about some local heroes and the notorious "skuldmonument" or debt monument. Next I visit the Tourist Information Center and Nieuwoudtville Tourist Market featuring an impressive collection of things for sale. There is certainly a flower theme here! I then give a tour of my accommodation before hitting the beautiful gravel roads to explore more of the residential areas. I immediately notice the breathtaking natural beauty and cleanliness of the town. In the business district, I visit several different shops and restaurants, including the Skuinskoek Paleis where I sample the legendary skuinskoek (translation: diagonal cake) and Die Blou Huis with its quirky touches. I also visit and engage with several friendly street vendors selling 'roosterkoek' and homemade jams. I then visit the Nieuwoudtville Waterfall, about 7 kilometres outside the town en route to Loeriesfontein. Again, I am struck by the breathtaking natural beauty of the area and the sheer variety of flora. I then return to Nieuwoudtville town to explore more of the town, including a visit to the rugby field and a very unique pharmacy. The vlog ends with me giving my thoughts on Nieuwoudtville and why this was a special visit for me. I hope you enjoy this video of Nieuwoudtville!
