Long John Baldry & the Beatles, I've Got My Mojo Workin

When The Beatles Opened for Long John Baldry: A Blues Legend Remembered When Long John passed away in 2005, I was given the monumental, heavy task of sorting through his video archives to put together the visual history for a massive screen at the Vancouver Island theater celebrating his life. His longtime partner, Oz Rex, gave me all the videos of John's performances to look through, and the crown jewel of the collection was the footage of The Beatles introducing him on their 1964 TV special in London. Back in '62, when Baldry played the Cavern Club in Liverpool, The Beatles were actually his opening act. Once they blew up and conquered the world, they didn't forget the blues giant. They invited him onto their special, and John, Paul, George, and Ringo introduced him and shouted out the chorus while Long John tore the house down on "I Got My Mojo Working." Seeing that performance completely blew me away back then—and honestly, it still does today. A true testament to a sophisticated colossus who helped shape the bedrock of British rock and blues.
