Eatonville, Florida: America’s Oldest Black Town Is Fighting for Its Future
Eatonville, Florida is the oldest self-governing Black municipality in the United States. Founded in 1887 by formerly enslaved people, it became a thriving community and the hometown of writer Zora Neale Hurston. Today, Eatonville is at risk of losing more than 100 acres of historically Black-owned land.
