It seems right, it seems logical, but it's exactly the opposite of what the marine predator's behavior indicates. The big fish doesn't inhabit the top of the structure — it inhabits the edge. And understanding this difference completely changes how you plan an ocean fishing trip with artificial lures. The predator's logic is based on energy efficiency. A predator that spends energy chasing prey in the middle of open water is an inefficient predator. What the predator actually does is position itself on the edge of the structure — where it has cover behind it and a wide view ahead — and let the current deliver the prey. This behavior is documented in several species of oceanic predatory fish and is the basis of any serious jig and plug fishing strategy at sea. The edge is not just lateral — it is three-dimensional. There is the lateral edge, where the rock ends horizontally and gives way to the water column. But there is also the upper edge, where the structure ends vertically and the free swimming zone begins.
