Written by HawkeyeSports.com No. 11 Iowa (16-2, 7-0) defeated No. 15 Michigan State (17-2, 6-2) on Sunday night inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena, 75-68. Senior Hannah Stuelke led scoring for Iowa with 22 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and three blocks. Sophomores Ava Heiden and Chit-Chat Wright joined her in double figures with 20 and 11 points respectively. The game started evenly matched on the floor. The Hawkeyes capitalized their scoring in the paint during the first quarter with Stuelke and Heiden combining for 10 points under the hoop. Wright closed a hard fought first quarter with a buzzer-beating three-point basket to put the Hawkeyes up, 22-16. Iowa started its second quarter scoring with a three-point basket from freshman Addie Deal, the Hawkeyes fourth of the day. Iowa’s defense held the Spartans to just 30.8 percent shooting from the field in the quarter. Wright led Iowa on a 7-0 run to close out the half leading, 41-29. Heiden sparked a 6-0 run for Iowa out of half to give the Hawkeyes their largest lead of the day with 16 points. After some back and forth baskets, Iowa was able to push their lead to 17, which was Michigan State’s largest deficit of the season. The Hawkeyes shared the love with five different players scoring in the quarter. Heiden led with nine points and two assists. Iowa headed into the final quarter with a 65-56 lead. The fourth quarter brought some heat back to the Hawkeyes. Iowa continued to spread the points around, finding a way to get done inside the arc. The Spartans were able to cut the lead to five with four minutes left in the quarter, but Stuelke drained a crucial step back jumper at the three-minute mark to give Iowa back their spark. The senior was also able to create chaos on a Spartan inbound to give the Hawkeyes the ball back with 45 seconds. The Hawkeyes closed out a hard-fought game, 75-68.
