Selecting the finest bamboo, this couple comes home to handcraft the summer essential: the ‘fan.’ The husband, Kim Dae-seok, is a master craftsman who has been making ‘folding fans,’ a type of hand fan for commoners, for three generations, utilizing the inner core of the bamboo as his material. His wife, Jeong Myeong-sun, assists him by boiling the paste, serving as his only apprentice and companion. Although fans have lost their place due to air conditioners and electric fans, and demand has dwindled, this couple creates them entirely by hand without using a single machine. For the couple, it is their pride and their very life. Here, there are people who have spent their entire lives alongside bamboo, silently holding their ground. For Grandfather Nam Sang-bu, who has visited the bamboo forest every day for 50 years in this area that accounts for 25% of the nation's bamboo habitats, the bamboo is his lifelong workplace and a grateful "field of living gold" that has raised his six children.
