The Stampede Subdivision is a major BNSF Railway freight rail line that runs between Auburn and Ellensburg across the Cascade Range via the historic Stampede Pass. Originally built by the Northern Pacific Railway in the 1880s, it crosses the mountains through the 1.86-mile Stampede Tunnel. The line was closed in 1984 but reopened by BNSF in 1996 to provide additional freight capacity.
