McBride Reminded Rubio Greenland Belongs To Denmark - He Said 'For Now.'
A member of Congress reminded the Secretary of State that Greenland belongs to Denmark — one of America's closest allies. His two-word reply: "For now." That's Rep. Sarah McBride (D-DE), and she didn't come to shout. She came to build a case, brick by brick, using nothing but facts and the President's own words. In this breakdown, I walk through the whole thing. Here's the backdrop, all on the record. The President has said America "never got anything from NATO," and that "they will do nothing for us." He's said the U.S. needs to "own" Greenland to defend it. And his administration has pushed to take control of the island — Greenland, which is part of Denmark, a NATO ally. So McBride asked the simple questions. Does Rubio agree we got "nothing" from NATO? Three times she asked — three times he pivoted to bases and reform, never co-signing the President's actual words. Then she brought the history most people have never been told. Article 5 — NATO's promise that an attack on one is an attack on all — has been invoked exactly once in history. Not for a European country. For the United States, after 9/11. In the war that followed, more than 1,000 Europeans died fighting alongside Americans. And the ally that lost the most troops per capita? Denmark — 44 soldiers killed in Afghanistan. (Rubio guessed it was the UK. He was wrong.) The same Denmark whose territory this administration has tried to take. Now, in fairness: there is a real, mainstream argument that NATO needs reform — that allies should pay more and the alliance should modernize. Rubio made that case, and it's a legitimate one. I give it to you in full. But there's a canyon between "pay your fair share" and "we might take your island." One is pressure. The other tells every ally that American protection is now conditional — and tells every adversary, including Vladimir Putin, that the promise at the center of NATO might not hold. McBride's final question was the real one: with allies watching, will the U.S. still defend a NATO member if Article 5 is invoked? A simple "yes" would have ended it. Rubio's answer: "We're still in NATO... but NATO needs significant changes." Not a yes. And everyone in that room heard the difference. Danish soldiers died for us after 9/11 — more per capita than any other ally. Some of their veterans have quietly taken their American medals off the wall this year. When McBride handed that "for now" back to Rubio, she wasn't scoring a point. She was asking whether the word of the United States still means something. That's worth asking out loud.
