PRIVACY VS CYBER FRAUD: INDIA PAUSES META’S WHATSAPP USERNAME ROLLOUT By Saurabh Shukla WhatsApp is preparing one of its biggest platform changes in years—allowing users to connect through unique usernames instead of sharing their phone numbers. While the feature is designed to strengthen user privacy, the Indian government has reportedly asked Meta to hold back its rollout until critical security concerns are addressed. With more than 54 crore WhatsApp users in India, authorities fear the feature could create new opportunities for identity theft, impersonation, and sophisticated financial fraud if adequate safeguards are not in place. However, it also introduces a new challenge: digital identity verification.
