After an unforgettable darshan at Meenakshi Amman Temple on Saturday, we stayed overnight in Madurai. The next morning, after having breakfast, we reached Madurai Junction Railway Station and boarded a train towards Thanjavur. By afternoon, we arrived at Thanjavur Junction Railway Station. From the railway station to the famous Brihadisvara Temple, the distance is around 1.6 km. One can take an auto-rickshaw, but we preferred walking and enjoyed the city atmosphere on the way to the temple. As we reached the temple, the first glimpse of the massive temple tower was breathtaking. We left our footwear outside and entered the temple premises. The temple looked absolutely beautiful in the evening light, and the peaceful atmosphere made the experience even more special. We were blessed with the divine darshan of Lord Brihadeeswara (Lord Shiva) and spent time exploring the entire temple complex. Every corner of the temple reflects the incredible engineering skills and artistic excellence of the Chola dynasty. History of Brihadeeswara Temple Brihadeeswara Temple, also known as the "Big Temple," was built by the great Chola king Rajaraja Chola I and was completed around 1010 CE. The temple is more than 1000 years old and stands as one of the greatest achievements of Indian architecture. The temple is recognized as part of the Great Living Chola Temples and attracts visitors from all over the world. Even after a millennium, the structure remains strong and majestic. Amazing Architecture 🏛️ The temple tower (Vimana) rises to about 66 meters (216 feet), making it one of the tallest temple towers in India. 🪨 The entire temple was constructed mainly using granite, even though there were no granite quarries nearby. Historians still admire the engineering techniques used to transport these massive stones. 🗿 The temple houses one of the largest Nandi statues in India. The giant Nandi is carved from a single stone and is a major attraction for visitors. ☀️ One of the most fascinating facts is the precision and symmetry of the temple design. The structure demonstrates the advanced knowledge of architecture, mathematics, and astronomy possessed by the Chola builders. 🎨 The temple walls contain ancient inscriptions and beautiful carvings that provide valuable information about Chola history, administration, culture, and art.
