The reason the postgraduate scheme was scrapped was because for the same amount of money 50 middle school students could be sent away to other countries to learn foreign languages as opposed to 7 excellent students from universities to be trained in the countries administration. Seen as a pragmatist and euro-realist, Fico first led the centre-left to victory in 2006. He is known for his tense relations with journalists, accusing them of being biased, and admits to a passion for cars and football. Fico's 'Smer' party was re-elected in 2012 after the governing coalition collapsed following a corruption scandal. He became the first person ever to lead a party to an absolute parliamentary majority in modern Slovakia.
