Inaugurated in 1963 to control flooding on the Chubut River, facilitate irrigation, and generate electricity, the Florentino Ameghino Dam has since become an oasis of vegetation and tranquility in the middle of the Chubut plateau. The imposing 225-meter-long dam, the turquoise waters of the reservoir, the sealing red of the volcanic rocks, the canyons, and the marine sediments from bygone eras—which can still be seen today—make the area a special place, very different from the surrounding steppe. Sport fishing is available at the Dam and in Villa Florentino Ameghino, both from the dam and by boat in the crystalline waters. Native trout, perch, and silverside are the most sought-after species. The rock walls and formations also allow for hiking and trekking, as well as rafting and rappelling for the more adventurous.
