Access to Cana Verde is via the BR 354 highway and is 225 km from the capital Belo Horizonte. The first to explore the lands where the municipality of Cana Verde is today was the Bandeirante Romão Fagundes do Amaral, prospecting for gold on the banks of the Jacaré River, and he was enchanted by the region, which he requested to possess through land grants, given by the King of Portugal. Romão Fagundes called his Portuguese clerk Manuel Fernandes Airão to help him develop a settlement in the area. The influence of Manuel Fernandes attracted other interested parties who came to settle and establish their farms. In the area, on the banks of the Jacaré River, the village of Matosinhos do Jacaré began to form, with some houses built by families who worked in the region's crops and cattle breeding, and a large ranch where drovers rested and ate. The village was the link between the city of Lavras and Western Minas Gerais. Dona Maria do Rosário, a farmer and owner of many slaves, had a new sugarcane plantation where she decided to build a chapel dedicated to Senhor Bom Jesus (Lord Good Jesus). The village grew, and more families arrived to establish farms or provide services, settling in the settlement. The families of Captain João Freire, Mr. Cipriano, and João Turco arrived, setting up businesses, and others from the Bastos, Freire, Cipriano, Anastácio, Monteiro, Neves, and Garcia families formed new families through marriages among themselves. In 1864, the settlement was elevated to the status of a district of Campo Belo with the name Senhor Bom Jesus de Cana Verde, and in 1923 it came under the jurisdiction of Perdões with the name Cana Verde. On December 30, 1962, it separated from Perdões to become the municipality of Cana Verde. Today, in March 2024, the municipality of Cana Verde has a population approaching 6,000 inhabitants, with a territorial area of 212.367 km², at an altitude of 700m, and is bathed by the Jacaré River and streams that belong to the Grande River basin. The municipalities that border the municipality of Cana Verde are: Santana do Jacaré, Perdões, Nepomuceno, and Campo Belo. The basis of Cana Verde's economy is agriculture and the provision of services. The municipality produces coffee, fruits, cereals, and vegetables, which represent the sector that contributes most to the municipality's revenue. The natural beauty of the rivers, waterfalls, and access to Lake Furnas at its extremities attracts many visitors to the city, as well as its popular festivals and religious celebrations, which are good reasons for you to visit, live, or invest in Cana Verde.
