When a reacting system reaches chemical equilibrium, it tends to remain in that state indefinitely, as long as it is not disturbed by some external factor. These external factors can be a change in the concentration of the substances participating in the reaction, in pressure or temperature, for example. French chemical engineer and chemist Henry Louis Le Chatelier (1850-1936), in 1884, formulated the principle about the behavior of systems in equilibrium when disturbed, and this became known as Le Chatelier's Principle. In a system at equilibrium, an increase in any of the concentrations results in a shift of the equilibrium to the other side, just as the removal of any substance causes a shift to its respective side. During the modifications, the values ​​of all concentrations are altered, but the value of the equilibrium constant (Kc) remains constant. We can explain this shift as follows: when we add reactants, the shift will be towards the products; and when we add products, the shift will be towards the reactants. In a system at equilibrium, when substances are removed, the shift will be: removal of reactants, the shift will be towards the reactants; removal of products, the shift will be towards the products.
