It gets its name from the five-peaked Mount Beshtau. Settlements of ancient people existed here as early as the 3rd millennium BC, and the first written mention of the area, Bish-Dag, meaning "five mountains," dates back to 1334. 🏞The founding date of Pyatigorsk is considered to be 1780, when the Konstantinovskaya Fortress was built here. In 1783, the first garrison was established in the fortress, and the small settlement of Goryachiye Vody (Hot Waters) emerged nearby. In 1803, by order of Alexander I, the settlement was designated a resort and was subject to development, and in 1830, Pyatigorsk received city status. Thanks to the work of the Italian architects Giuseppe and Giovanni Bernardazzi, the city was planned and developed, and became very popular among vacationers. The city and its surrounding areas are home to over 130 mineral water springs of almost every known variety in the world. Clean mountain air, beautiful landscapes, and unique attractions attract a huge number of tourists to the city. 🏞 Tsvetnik Park is perhaps one of the most interesting places in Pyatigorsk, as it is home to a wealth of attractions. Two hundred years ago, the area where the park now stands was nothing but swamps, but with the increase in tourist traffic to Pyatigorsk, the situation has changed dramatically. The swamps were drained, the area was cleared, and renowned architects arrived from Italy to make the park the perfect place for recreation. It was here, just over a century ago, that the Lermontov Gallery opened—the first building in Pyatigorsk constructed of metal and glass using a then-new technology. It's worth remembering that Mikhail Yuryevich Lermontov, the great classic of Russian literature, tragically died in a duel in Pyatigorsk on July 15, 1841. "Flower Garden" is a wonderful place to get to know Pyatigorsk better, take an interesting tour, go on a date, or simply stroll. 🏞Mount Mashuk is a failed volcano, rising 993 meters, rich in natural mineral springs. The mountain is shaped like a truncated cone and is surrounded by four forts. In the 557.9-meter-high "Hot Mountain" fort, local residents have long carved out baths filled with healing water. After the Russians arrived, bathing areas for vacationers appeared here. Karst caves are also located within the depths of Mount Goryachaya. The gentle slopes of Mount Mashuk are covered with forests and meadows, and numerous caves and grottoes are nestled within. More than 80 plant species grow here, including rare and endangered species such as dwarf euonymus and narrow-leaved snowdrop. The area boasts several attractions: the Chinese Gazebo, the Eagle sculpture, Lake Proval, the Gates of Love, the Aeolian Harp gazebo, and others. 🚡The Pyatigorsk cable car, leading to Mount Mashuk, opened in 1971. It is 964 meters long and takes three minutes. Its unique design is that it has no intermediate supports. Two cabins, each accommodating 20 people, depart simultaneously from opposite stations and meet halfway along the route. The most picturesque views open up on the left side. The lower station is located on the southern slope of Mount Mashuk. 🏞One of Pyatigorsk's main attractions is located on the southern slope of Mount Mashuk. At the bottom of a cone-shaped, 41-meter-high sinkhole lies a karst lake, known as "Proval." In Lermontov's time, the cave was considered an extinct crater, and locals called it "Hell's Abyss" and believed a dragon lived within. The 11-meter-deep lake has a turquoise color and an unpleasant odor due to the hydrogen sulfide and bacteria in the water. The water temperature is 26–42°C. The "Proval" was discovered in 1793 by biologist Peter Simon Pallas. At that time, there were two bodies of water at the bottom, connected by a strait. In 1837, Prince V.S. Golitsyn conceived the idea of ​​building a platform over the lake, with a special basket allowing access to the water. Scientists first descended into the "Proval" in 1857.
