Gold, Hunting & Survival in New Zealand’s Frozen Wilderness

Three days alone in the frozen backcountry of New Zealand’s South Island. With temperatures dropping well below zero, I head deep into the mountains in search of gold, deer, and chamois. From frozen rivers and icy camps to steep alpine climbs, this trip pushed both gear and determination to the limit. Along the way I prospect remote creeks for gold, hunt through rugged alpine country, cook camp meals in sub-zero conditions, and share a few survival tricks that help make life easier when the weather turns nasty. At one point I even find myself climbing mountains in a wetsuit 😅 This isn’t a luxury camping trip. It’s raw, real backcountry adventure with all the challenges that come with it. There’s also a glimpse into the history of the area and the people who once worked these mountains long before us. If you enjoy gold prospecting, hunting, camping, survival, and exploring some of New Zealand’s wildest places, you’re in the right place.
