The Complete 1979-1982 Ford XD Falcon – An Aussie Icon Reimagined
The Ford XD Falcon, introduced in March 1979, represented a significant gamble for Ford Australia as it sought to replace the XC model during a period of global fuel crises and changing consumer demands. Avoiding a direct import of a smaller European platform, which Ford executives deemed unsuitable for Australia’s specific needs for towing and heavy-duty use, the local team spearheaded "Project Blackwood" to develop a unique, wide-bodied vehicle. This design philosophy prioritised local requirements, such as "three-across" rear seating and robust chassis rails for towing, ultimately securing the support of Henry Ford II to proceed with this bespoke Australian program. Technologically, the XD was a leap forward that balanced its traditional ruggedness with modern advancements. It featured significant weight-reduction measures, becoming the first domestic vehicle to utilise plastic bumpers, a plastic fuel tank, and a plastic dashboard structure, which collectively contributed to a 10% drag reduction over the XC. Furthermore, Ford introduced an "Alloy Head" engine in June 1980, which improved efficiency and power while reducing engine weight by 24 kg, showcasing the company's commitment to adapting to tightening emissions standards. Despite receiving a controversial reception from automotive media at its launch, the XD Falcon proved to be a commercial triumph. It successfully navigated the challenges of the Australian market, outselling the down-sized Holden Commodore and establishing a design blueprint that would influence local automotive manufacturing for years to come. By the time production concluded in March 1982, nearly 200,000 units had been produced, cementing the XD's legacy as a car that perfectly balanced European-inspired sophistication with the durability required for Australian conditions.
