New art skill: alcohol markers for landscape drawing ✶ PART 1 (chronological progress)
How do you teach yourself a new art skill? Do you rely on tutorials or do you try to reinvent the wheel? For me, it's mostly endless hours and sketchbooks pages trying to work out the problem. In this case, I'm learning how to use alcohol markers in a very specific style. I don't like overly blended or "clean" looking drawings, I love big chunky expressive marks and creative ways of layering and using color. So far I haven't found any tutorials about the style I like, so I have been forced to figure it out as I go. Is that a bad thing? No - it just takes a lot longer 🤣 Over the last 10 years I've dabbled with markers and I gave up many times. But I'm determined to learn! Anyways, I hope you enjoy hearing about my step-by-step process of how I teach myself a new art skill. I'm driven by my interest in drawing landscapes with markers, so that's what I focus on (for the most part). Markers ➤ So far my favorite marker (I've tried many) are the Shinhan Touch Twin because I love how they fit in my hand and their nib shapes, texture, and sturdiness. I prefer chisel tips. I dislike brush tips. Paper ➤ My favorite paper is yet to be found, but since I prefer the convenience of mixed-media sketchbooks, so far I've been mostly using Stillman and Birn Zeta and Delta. Since editing this, I've also received a Rendr sketchbook which is really nice but I'll need more time with it to decide if I like it. Artists ➤ Artists who have a marker style I like (but not one I want to emulate): Lena Leshko Rosies Sketchbook Aimian Mao Anna Rastorgueva Many of them offer tutorials if you're interested. 00:00 Intro 02:47 My background 03:43 2007-2010 04:57 2010-2017 05:57 2017 - first marker sketchbook 08:51 2019 - first marker video 10:03 2020 10:40 2021 11:10 The turning point 15:06 Markers are finally fun 15:43 Current marker sketchbooks 33:15 Final thoughts ----------------------------------- ➤ My Supply List: https://bit.ly/SBfavesupplies ➤ Tutorials & Blog: https://fearlessbrush.com/painting/ ➤ Patreon: http://bit.ly/sburnspatreon ➤ Instagram: http://bit.ly/sburnsinsta ➤ Prints: https://bit.ly/sbbookshop
